September is Menopause Awareness Month!
For most women, Menopause conjures up images of hot flashes, sleepless nights and getting older. There is a lot more to what is happening in our bodies during this time and so much confusion! So today, I’m dishing out my top 5 Facts about Menopause…
Facts About Menopause
Fact #1 – Having a hot flash doesn’t mean you are in Menopause.
Menopause doesn’t technically happen until you have gone a full 12 months without a period. Yes, if you have a period at the 11 month mark you start the clock over again. The time before Menopause where a woman’s periods may be irregular and symptoms begin is called Perimenopause.
Fact #2 – Perimenopause may be worse.
Many of the symptoms women experience are worse in Perimenopause than Menopause. Oh and Perimenopause can begin as early as your 30s.
Fact #3 – Menopause is different for everyone.
There are over 30 symptoms of Perimenopause and Menopause! Just because your girlfriend had terrible hot flashes doesn’t mean you will. There is no one-size-fits-all approach.
Fact #4 – There is a ton of misinformation out there.
We have healthcare providers who are giving out incorrect information ladies! Now I’m not saying they are doing this on purpose. There is a lot of misinformation and honestly, there is not a lot of education for doctors about Menopause and aging for women.
Fact #5 – There IS something you can do about your symptoms.
Lifestyle changes like exercising, reducing the amount of wine you drink (ouch) and getting enough sleep are very helpful in dealing with Perimenopause/Menopause symptoms. There are also some amazing supplements that can help as well. Of course BHRT (Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy) is a fantastic addition for many women as well.
