This time of year, as we celebrate Thanksgiving, gratitude is at the forefront of our minds. Many gather around the table and share what they are thankful for. Perhaps you have your own family traditions to show gratitude each year.
“At times, our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.” – Albert Schweitzer
Gratitude Helps
Practicing gratitude is important year round, every day. Not just because it is the right thing to do, but there are also some great health benefits!
Studies have shown that when we express emotions likes gratitude and appreciation on a regular basis, we activate a relaxation response and shut off our stress response. Read that again – simply showing gratitude helps us reduce our stress response!
Robert Emmons at the University of California-Davis with Michael McCullough from the University of Miami have deduced that people feel better physically and mentally when counting their blessings. Their study – Counting Blessings Versus Burdens: An Experimental Investigation of Gratitude and Subjective Well-Being in Daily Life) was published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
In an age when most of us are stressed on a daily basis, and we know this impacts our health negatively, how great is it that something free and easy like showing gratitude and appreciation can make a difference.
